Mariachi
OLLU will join The Mariachi Campanas
de America for “From the Heart
of San Antonio Valentine’s Day
Serenata” on Feb. 9 at 7:30
p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.
The concert is part of the fifth Calle
24 Performing Arts Series put on by
OLLU. The series is held annually
to celebrate arts on the West Side
and the Hispanic influence on the
arts.
“Calle 24 serves to promote
Hispanic arts and artists, and there
is no better way to promote not only
the ‘Calle’ mission than
with a concert of musicians from San
Antonio’s own West Side,”
said Dr. Rachel Cruz, Mariachi OLLU
director and assistant professor of
music.
According to the Mariachi Campanas
Web site, the group’s distinct
sound is credited to its “ability
to combine traditional Mexican mariachi
music with Latin and mainstream pop
rhythms.” The group, under the
musical direction of Juan Ortiz, was
founded in 1978 in San Antonio.
Mariachi OLLU will also perform. The
group will be directed by Cruz and
recently received second-place honors
at the “Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza”
held in San Antonio last December.
“Mariachi OLLU and Mariachi
Campanas de America epitomize what
it is to be an artist, Latino, and
a San Antonionian,” Cruz said.
Admission for the show is free for
all OLLU faculty, staff and students.
General admission tickets are $5 and
are being sold in the bookstore. Tickets
will also be available at the door.
