The
Saints basketball team was in action
at home against Southwest Texas Junior
College on Jan. 30, losing 99-64.
The Saints got off to a strong start
with good rebounding and defense early.
In fact it wasn’t until 10 minutes
left in the first half that the Saints
lost the lead. Once the team gave
up the lead, they never regained it.
SWTJC kept their pressure defense
on, consistently hit their free throws,
and went to halftime with a 21-point
lead.
“The first half started off
strong, but we just let this one slip
away, we were making our shots, and
they were missing theirs, but we let
it slip away from us,” said
forward/center Danny Sommers after
the game.
In the second half, SWTJC was even
more dominant than in the first half,
with multiple fast-break chances and
even two dunks against the Saints.
SWTJC never took the pressure off
a Saints team that was hampered by
sloppy passing, multiple fouls and
the absence of senior co-captain Anthony
Gomez, who received a technical foul
in the first half and never returned
to the court.
Asked his thoughts on the loss after
the game Gomez said, “Defensively
we weren’t focused. We tried
to leave it all out there on the court,
but we just weren’t focused
on the defensive side of the ball
tonight.”
The Saints next match up against San
Antonio College (at SAC) on Feb. 6.
