Editorial: Online Lake Front’s “Declaration of Principles”

Any movie buff will distinctly remember the part in “Citizen Kane” in which Charles Kane reads to Jedediah Leland, his friend and co-worker at the newspaper that Kane owns and manages, his “Declaration of Principles.” Kane’s principles included the promise to provide the people of New York “a daily paper that will tell all the news honestly.” He also wanted to “provide them with a fighting and tireless champion of their rights as citizens and as human beings.”

As the first online editor of The Lake Front, I promise to provide you, the reader, with the most accurate information a student news site can provide. The Lake Front takes pride in its ability to deliver hard-hitting news as well as lighthearted entertainment. As we unveil our Lake Front Web site, we promise to honor the same principles and guidelines that our print edition adheres to.

The online Lake Front’s “Declaration of Principles,” includes our vow to remain honest in our stories. We will uphold our task to cover all angles of a story without bias. The site will always strive to provide a much-needed entertainment factor with blogs and feature stories. And, as always, The Lake Front staff, contributing writers and anyone else who provides articles to the site will always keep in mind the opinions and views of the people that matter the most, you, our loyal readers.

After Kane requests to have his “Declaration of Principles” printed, Leland asks for the original copy, saying:

“I'd like to keep that particular piece of paper myself. I have a hunch it might turn out to be something pretty important, a document ... like the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, and my first report card at school.”

Print this “Declaration of Principles” out, tape it to the wall, or just keep it tucked away under a stack of papers. For this is the beginning of a new kind of journalism to hit Our Lady of the Lake University.
