It’s
not often that college art students
receive the chance to exhibit their
artwork at a public venue. This opportunity
recently came along for several Lake
students.
The artwork of nine faculty members
and 13 students is currently on display
at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.
A grand reception was held on Jan.
27.
April Atkinson, chair of the art department,
said, “I suggested the faculty/student
exhibit because I was aware of the
fine work being produced by both the
faculty and students at OLLU.”
The students have previously exhibited
their work on campus, but received
this opportunity to expose their work
to the community.
Rosie Castaño, a senior majoring
in art, said, “We were excited
and glad to hear from the Guadalupe
Cultural Arts Center that the estimated
amount of people to show were around
300.”
For art students, the exhibition helped
them gain exposure for what they love
to do.
At the exhibition, some students,
like senior Lacey Griffith, had interested
buyers for her artwork.
Griffith’s art was a “set
of four self-portrait pieces,”
all done digitally. Although she gets
offers for her work, she says, “usually
I give them as gifts.”
The exhibition contained a variety
of art from digital art to paintings,
all representing different concepts.
Castaño said, “I do all
types of art but emphasize more on
photography.” In particular,
her passion is black and white photography.
There is still time to see Castaño’s
work and that of the other artists.
“The work will be up through
the third week of February and I hope
all will go have a look,” Atkinson
said.
The event was such a success that
there are plans for another exhibition
in March where the students will be
presenting their artwork along with
students from St. Philips College.
The show will be called “East
Meets West.”
The faculty members who participated
in the exhibition are: April Atkinson,
Sara Booth, James Cobb, John Hernandez,
Brian Jobe, Joe Moreno, Charlie Morris,
Sal Torres and Deborah Kuetzpalin
Vasquez.
The students who participated in the
exhibition are: Mark Aguilar, Chris
Burrell, Castaño, Oscar Galvan,
Felicia Gomez, Rebecca Greene, Griffith,
Denise Knebel, Edith Parra, Judith
Parra, Robert Poschmann, Matthew Ruiz
and Susana Zumbrano.
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts
Center is located at 1300 Guadalupe
Street. The show will be open to the
public until Feb. 26.
