The
Student Government Association (SGA)
is preparing for its first Homeless
Awareness Week. The event runs from
Feb. 25 through Feb. 29 and the organization
is encouraging students and faculty
to participate.
Homeless Awareness week consists of
speakers, presentations and, of course,
helping those less fortunate. Each
day of the week focuses on different
topics including education about the
homeless situation in San Antonio,
mental health, social work and legal
issues.
The purpose of this event is to “create
more awareness on the economic problems
the city faces” said Marco Cepeda,
SGA president.
Some of the speakers confirmed for
the first day are Susan R. Sheeran,
president of Merced Housing Texas,
and Estella Garza, coordinator of
SAISD Homeless Transition program.
Both speakers will focus on education
and the importance of religion for
the homeless population.
Other speakers attending are Ann Hutchinson
Meyers, Ph.D. and board chair on SAMMinistries,
which is the largest provider of care
and shelter in San Antonio.
Dr. Regina Cusack, of the Lake, Patti
Randle, chairwoman of Haven for Hope,
and Judge Kimberly Kreider will be
presenting throughout the week.
Presentations are scheduled for 4
p.m. Monday-Thursday in the Providence
West Social Room (PWSR) and on Friday
in UWAC 104 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Following the presentations, students
and volunteers will visit local homeless
shelters and hand out clothing. This
event will close out the weeklong
event.
Students are encouraged to attend
the presentations and participate
in the events. “It is important
for students to take the time to get
a better understanding of the homeless
situation in San Antonio and hopefully
inspire them to continue to help,”
said Cepeda .
SGA is taking clothing donations for
this event. Donation boxes can be
found around campus. When donating
please include your name and contact
information. Service hours will be
given to all of those who donate.
