Dr. Alexander: The Everyday Woman

Editor

The Office of Academic Affairs is home to vice president Jacquelyn Alexander.  Standing out from her various books on leadership, visitors to her office can find an interesting piece of memorabilia. A Wonder Woman action figure displayed on her bookshelf.

This administrator finds time for relaxation despite her hectic work schedule. “The first thing that I do when I get home is change clothes,” Dr. Alexander said. “In my spare time, when I do get time, I enjoy gardening, knitting, reading, and needlepoint.”

This avid sewer leads a quiet home life with her now-retired husband. While working on her needlepoint she usually watches television shows such as “Studio 60” and “Boston Legal.”

The once special education professor came to OLLU by accident. While interning at the Northeast Independent School District for her doctoral program, a friend recommended working at OLLU in order to finish her thesis and gain experience in teaching special education. Eventually her years of teaching various subjects, such as leadership, resulted in her attaining a higher administrative position, and as Alexander said, “I kept staying.”

Born at the tail end of World War II, Alexander has spent most of her adult life in Texas. She began her educational career at Southern Methodist University. After attending SMU for two years, Alexander transferred to University of Texas at Austin where she completed her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. Throughout her life, she has traveled to England and even spent time in the Middle East.

Now as the vice president of Academic Affairs, Alexander handles all areas of academia throughout the university. She enjoys the people she works with, especially the students. However, Alexander dislikes the bureaucracy involved with her job.

“It is frustrating not being able to get things done as quickly as I would like,” Alexander said.
