The
Center for Women currently is hosting
the Lenten Series, “Voices of
Courage.” The event began on
Feb. 13 and will continue until March
5, ending on that day with a silent
march.
The silent march will be the fourth
and final session of the Lenten Series.
The march will begin at 11:30 a.m.,
starting at the Congregation of Divine
Providence (CDP) cafeteria, going
on to the Worden School, and ending
at the Lake cafeteria. This will be
the first time a silent march is part
of the Lenten Series.
The series consists of four sessions
that touch on several issues including
“Reclaiming our Home, the Earth,”
“The Cries in our Homes,”
and “Mothers of the Disappeared.”
The sessions deal with social justice
issues and focus on what people can
do to get involved and make a difference.
Sophomore Aracely Jimenez, who has
participated in the first sessions
of this series, said, “This
(series) has made me more aware of
the social issues around me, and what
I can do to help.” This is the
goal for this series, to encourage
and inform people that things can
be done right now to improve society.
“We can all do something to
contribute to change,” said
Nancy Thompson, director of the Center
for Women. Each topic is designed
to bring awareness to the social issues
that are happening right here in our
community and around the world. Throughout
the series, participants will be creating
art pieces to carry during the silent
march.
People who participate in the march
are encouraged to bring symbols or
photographs of issues or people who
are important to them.
“It’s important to put
a face with the problem,” said
Virgina Valenzuela, associate director
of the Center for Women.
Students and faculty are invited to
attend the silent march. Those interested
in attending the remaining sessions
may contact the Center for Women at
Ext. 2446 for registration.
