The
week began for the Saints on Monday,
Feb. 18 as the team hosted Palo Alto
College. In a game played without
Coach Frank Hernandez, who was at
home sick with the flu, the Saints
lost, 89-66.
Sophomore forward Derek Ezell attributed
the loss to a number of things.
“We had some good plays in the
first half, but the second half they
came out and played us hard. Without
coach and a couple key players, they
had our number even with our bench
players playing well, but it was nice
to see guys that usually don’t
get action get into the game and play,”
said Ezell.
The team seemed to play with intensity
even though they were missing key
pieces.
On Wednesday, Feb. 20 the team played
St. Philips College at the UWAC gymnasium
in a game that stayed relatively close
through the first half. At half-time,
St. Philips led 26-14.
It was the tale of two halves in this
game as well. A strong defensive battle
by St. Philips led the charge, and
the Saints offense struggled to regain
its form, however, they eventually
lost.
“It was a good effort by the
team, but, at the end of the game,
if you don’t make enough points
you don’t win the game,”
said senior forward Jesus Gonzalez.
The week ended on Saturday, Feb. 23
with an 85-52 loss as Coastal Bend
came into town and defeated the Saints.
The final game of the season will
be Wednesday, Feb. 27 as the Saints
travel to Palo Alto College to play
Northwest Vista College.
