The art department and its students
are busy preparing for their second
high-profile show of the semester.
Titled “East Meets West,”
students from the Lake and from St.
Philips College will exhibit their
artwork as part of the Revitalization
Campaign Art Series.
The exhibit kicks off Saturday, March
3 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
and runs through March 21.
April Joyce Atkinson is the professor
in charge of gathering up the students
she feels most qualify to be in the
exhibition. Most seniors who are graduating
usually get chosen to exhibit their
artwork for “this can get them
some exposure with the community,
school, and other artists around town
before they graduate,” says
Atkinson.
Senior student and artist, Rosie Castano,
is one of the artists chosen by Atkinson
to exhibit her work at this Saturday’s
event. Castano said she feels very
proud and honored to have her artwork
displayed at the event for it “allows
people from both sides of San Antonio
to see my artwork.”
A few days before the show opened,
Atkinson and Castano were working
diligently to complete the framework
for some of the projects being displayed.
They walked around with huge frames
and worked to make sure everything
looks presentable.
Some of Castano’s art projects,
primarily her printmaking, stencils,
and etchings, will be displayed. Even
though she says some of these are
not her strongest points in art she
still feels proud to have them displayed.
“I’ve been doing art since
I was a young kid,” says Castano.
Photography, especially the digital
media area, is Castano’s favorite
area in art for she says it “allows
me to manipulate the images the way
that I want them to be.” Some
of her photos can be seen on a wall
on the third floor of the Fine Art
Building.
One thing that both Atkinson and Castano
seem to agree upon is that they “want
to represent the school and community
to show that the Lake has a wonderful
art program and that everyone has
a different style of art.”
