Honoring
women’s month and women talents,
a full moon celebration will be held
Saturday, March 3, in the Sueltenfuss
Library Community Room from 6 to 9
p.m., free of charge. This event will
bring together established female
artists and students in music, art
and poetry.
Dolores Zapata Murff, founder of the
event, has been holding similar celebrations
for several years. At least three
times a year she “would have
full moon parties” where female
artists were invited. During these
sessions, “we would draw from
each others’ energy,”
she says.
Mujeres Celebrando Sus Don is a celebration
of women and their relationships.
Through different types of arts, the
connection between spirituality, feminism
and emotion will be highlighted.
“When I paint I feel that everything
else around me melts away and it is
just me and my spirit,” says
Monica Alaniz, a UTSA student artist
involved in the event.
“I have seen the way art moves
people. It can make them smile, laugh
or even angry,” says Alaniz.
“I want the work to speak to
them.”
The event is sponsored by La Llamada
through a mini-grant. The grant is
not usually given to an undergraduate
or to an individual but an exception
was made after receiving Murff’s
proposal.
The goal of Mujeres Celebrando Sus
Don is for women to celebrate each
other and their gifts.
“I don’t believe my art
is a gift. My eyes, my ability to
listen to the energia around me and
most importantly, the mujeres around
me that widen my view of the world,
are my gifts,” says Anel Flores,
an artist and activist who will take
part in the three-hour event.
