In
the funny sports comedy “Semi-Pro,”
set in the 1970s, Jackie Moon (Will
Ferrell) is an owner, player and coach
of the American Basketball Association
(ABA) team the Flint Michigan Tropics.
The team hasn’t amounted to
anything until the ABA commissioner
(David Koechner) says the ABA and
the National Basketball Association
(NBA) will merge at the end of the
ABA season. The catch is that only
the four best ABA teams will go and
the rest will dissolve.
Moon convinces them to allow the four
teams with the best records to be
chosen. Moon, in an attempt to make
his team a winner, trades a washer
machine for Monix (Woody Harrelson),
a former Boston Celtic bench player.
Monix turns out to be the team’s
best player other than Clarence “Coffee”
Black (Andre Benjamin). Monix becomes
the offensive and defensive coordinator
to mold the team into a real team.
Can Moon and Monix get the Tropics
into the NBA?
Believe it or not this is Ferrell’s
fourth sports comedy. I was hoping
this would be his best yet, but it
shoots an airball. Come on, it’s
a basketball movie, and at least it’s
better than “Kicking and Screaming.”
I’m a fan of Ferrell, and he
can be very funny. However, in “Semi-Pro,”
things are a bit too random, certain
characters don’t need to be
in the film, and some parts are not
funny.
Since Ferrell is a “Saturday
Night Live” alum, expect to
see cameos from some current and former
SNL players.
The vulgar humor is funny, but overall
the movie is just OK. I recommend
watching Ferrell’s classics
“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron
Burgundy” and “Talladega
Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.”
