‘“The
Mist” is based on a Stephen
King novella of the same name. One
night a terrible storm destroys David
Drayton’s (Thomas Jane) lakeside
home. The next morning the family
notices an unusual mist coming from
the mountains.
David takes his son and his neighbor
Brent Norton (Andre Braugher) to the
supermarket. While in the supermarket,
the mist surrounds the area. A local
covered in blood runs into the store
saying there’s something in
the mist. The customers stay inside
the supermarket waiting for help or
for the mist to pass.
Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden),
a deeply religious woman, claims it’s
the apocalypse, causing some of the
people to go crazy. The shoppers begin
to turn on each other. Will whatever
is in the mist kill the survivors?
Or will they kill each other?
The film has had mixed reviews. One
of the main reasons some have said
they don’t like it is because
the film turns into a sci-fi film.
I, however, really enjoyed this film
because the directing, writing and
acting were great. I’m a big
fan of Frank Darabont, who has directed
other Stephen King works turned into
films such as “The Green Mile”
and “The Shawshank Redemption.”
Darabont wanted “The Mist”
to be his directorial debut, but,
due to conflicts, the film ended up
taking 20 years to make.
Fans of the theatrical version will
want to see the black and white version
located in the two-disc special edition
DVD. I give this a big recommendation
because it’s more of a drama
with sci-fi elements.
