NAIA program moves forward

With the end of the semester just around the bend, Athletic Director Jack Hank and the rest of the OLLU athletics staff is busy making plans for the fall and preparing the school for the inaugural seasons of the men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams.

Students were able to get involved in this process last week by voting on the name of the two teams. The results from this race are scheduled to be released by mid-April.

“We had a great showing of student support,” Hank said. “It shows that students are getting excited about the teams.”

The unexpected change in weather has slowed down renovations on the soccer field, but, according to Hank, everything still remains on schedule for its unveiling on Aug. 1.

Both teams are still in the process of recruiting and signing players. The soccer team has a total of 21 players accepted to the university and committed to the team while the volleyball team boasts eight players also accepted and committed.

“There is still a lot to do, but things are looking good,” Hank said.

Plans for what is tentatively being called “Armadillo Pride Week” for the fall are being discussed. The week will be a “homecoming of sorts,” Hank said.

Spirit Day has been moved to be included in this week which is currently scheduled for Sept. 24-27.

The “spirit” aspect of the games is also being covered by Adrienne Rodriguez who is now in charge of the OLLU cheerleaders and pep band. The pep band made its debut at a recent basketball game this semester and the cheerleaders have been a constant support system for the current athletics on campus.
