Embracing the diversity

Lake reporter

The Spurs are the hottest team in the league. It’s actually a proven fact. With only three losses since the All-Star break, the Spurs currently top all other teams in the league since the break.

However, this column is not going to be about how “defense wins championships” and returning to the “nuts and bolts” of basketball is a guaranteed way to gain success in the league. This writer can be quite superstitious and so has no desire to jinx her Spurs. So instead, this column is going to be dedicated to the foreign players on the team because they seem to be making the most noise off the court.

NBA Noche Latina

The NBA selected four teams: the Miami Heat, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Phoenix Suns, and the San Antonio Spurs for a rather unique honor this season. These four teams have been chosen to take part in the NBA Noche Latina commemorative uniform program celebrating the influx of Latin American players the league has seen recently, as well as the significant percentage of Hispanic fans in the league.

The Spurs unveiled their uniforms earlier last week when they played the Portland Trailblazers. The uniforms feature piping along the sides of both the jersey and the shorts that consists of the flags of the 20 Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and Brazil where Portuguese is the native language. The uniforms also boast a unique Noche Latina logo.

Tony Parker joins off-the-court ballas

Parker recently added to his French rap career and debuted his second music video to the track “Balance Toi.” The video can be found at YouTube.com if you search “Tony Parker music video” as well as his inaugural video, “Top of the Game.”

This time around instead of asking more of his fellow players, (Robert Horry, Tim Duncan, Brent Barry, and Nazr Mohammed appeared in the music video for “Top of the Game”) Parker showed his support for the Spurs by having the Spurs Silver Dancers perform in his video. His fiancée also makes an appearance.

Beno’s on Myspace

One can find any athlete on MySpace these days. Of course everyone knows that Kobe Bryant really doesn’t check “his” MySpace page and actually he probably doesn’t even know that he has a page nor does he care.

Spurs fans should be thrilled to know that this is not the case when looking at Beno Udrih’s “official MySpace page.” When you go to add Beno as a friend keep in mind that you are really asking Beno to be your friend on MySpace. Beno actually checks his MySpace page as frequently as possible and says that he loves the support he receives from his fans on there.
Personal side note…

The sports duo has been reduced to just a sports girl these days. The other half of the team has found himself in a new situation and on a different course in life. The half of the team that remains here and dedicated to carrying on what they had started together simply wishes him the best in this new endeavor. He will be greatly missed. In order to keep this game going, I am in search of someone to pick up the ball he left bouncing and fill the empty spot he has left behind. Anyone willing to take up the challenge should stop by the Lake Front office (UWAC 105) and fill out an application.
