“The Heartbreak Kid” reunites Ben Stiller with famed comedy directing duo Peter and Bobby Farrelly. Stiller plays Eddie, a guy who never seems to be able to commit to a girl. After being embarrassed at his best friend’s wedding, Eddie meets Lila (Malin Ackerman) while trying to rescue her from getting mugged. The two meet up again in Eddie’s sporting goods store. Eventually, after six weeks, Eddie and Lila get married.
While on their way down to Cabo San Lucas for their honeymoon, Eddie wonders if he made the wrong decision. Lila seems to have flipped a switch and become a different person. Complicating matters is Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), Eddie’s new friend that he meets in Cabo. Miranda turns out to be Eddie’s dream woman. Can Eddie decide between Miranda and Lila?
The movie was hilarious. Stiller has such a perfect sense of comedic timing. Ackerman, who is best known as Freakshow’s wife in “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” totally takes the Lila character and runs with it. This could be her breakout comedic performance. Jerry Stiller, Ben’s dad who also plays his dad in this film, lends a real dynamic as father and son play out their relationship onscreen.
Michelle Monaghan plays Miranda with a realistic touch. The movie could have been a romantic comedy with just Monaghan and Stiller. She is obviously an opposite version of Lila. She brings that girl-next-door quality to the film; it’s a certain sweetness that goes a long way to make the film endearing.
The movie has a problem with a few dragging points, and the Farrelly brothers go for a bit too much in the moralizing department. However, if you want a light, funny comedy, then “The Heartbreak Kid” is worth your money.
