Students chime in on SGA

Contributing writer

As a new school year starts, a new Student Government Association (SGA) does as well. For OLLU’s SGA, change is nothing new.

Over the last two years, SGA has been through three different presidents as well as vice presidents. All three presidents have had different politics and, therefore, their goals seem quite different.

Some OLLU students believe this situation hurts the system and the school because they believe nothing is being accomplished.

Naomi Roel, a graduating senior, says she has not attended any SGA meetings and does not even know what the program actually does.

Junior Esli Argueta, the SGA representative for LAMDA, has been part of SGA since her freshman year. She has been through all three presidents and believes the structure could be more organized.

“The general council should be more familiar with the Robert’s Rules of Order. Little simple things like those would make the meetings a lot smoother,” Argueta said.

However, she believes that students’ concerns are addressed by SGA and they try to accomplish most of their goals. Regarding the change of presidents she says, “Change is good, we kind of just have to go with the flow.”

Justin Lamparder, a junior at Incarnate Word, said he attends class and then leaves campus to go to his full-time job. When asked about his SGA, he responded with a puzzled look and said, “My what?”

Many OLLU students share Lamparder’s confusion.  When asked about SGA, some commuters responded: Who are they? What exactly do they do?

Some students question if it matters at all to have an SGA. Junior Jessica Wilks said, “Are we even considered when decisions are made?”

Sophomore Ricardo De Los Santos says he does not see any changes in the school. He said he does not see anything coming from SGA “except the 24-hour study lab, but besides that, what do they do?”

Amber Lopez, a sophomore, says she has been living on campus since her first semester but has not attended an SGA meeting. However, she says, “maybe if I actually went I might know what is happening on campus.”
