Writers of the Lake, a revival for students

Reporter

For those who attend meetings of the Writers of the Lake, only one word can describe their motivation: revival.

The group, sponsored by the Center for Women in Church and Society, has steadily been increasing its membership numbers and enjoying the renewed interest in the organization.

Today, the Writers of the Lake are doing great. With about 20 members and hopefully more in the future, the group looks as though it can conquer anything.

The Writers of the Lake hold their meetings every Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Elliot House with refreshments provided.

“The purpose of it is for the students,” said Jorge DeLaRosa-Burwick, a facilitator of the Writers of the Lake.

The meetings typically include a writing warm-up, a workshop that includes members picking numerous words and then incorporating the words into a story, and a writing reflection in which students share their projects or stories.

Within the meetings, students are able to talk about their pieces of work, whether it is poetry, plays or stories and hear constructive criticism from other students and writers.

Students also learn how to practice writing for graduate school, how to receive criticism from others, improve grammar, and how to motivate oneself to write.

“It’s a great atmosphere to write your works,” said Aracely Jimenes, a freshman.

As for the requirements to join this club, only one thing is needed: participation.

“Everyone is welcome,” DeLaRosa-Burwick said. “However, you have to be willing to participate.”

As for the future, the Writers of the Lake have plans. They would love to start a publication of the works of students at OLLU not to mention the thought of an open-mic night where students could share poetry or other works. The group also plans on attending a literary festival in the spring of 2008.
