Before the official Saints’ athletic teams came to OLLU, the men’s basketball team was the ticket for sports enthusiasts. Now, as the 2007 basketball season gets under way, the 15-player team is getting itself together with a new coach. The first game is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 20 at Palo Alto College.
The opening is promising to be an entertaining one. As a far as a rivalry goes, Frank Hernandez, the new coach for OLLU, has this to say, “I am looking forward to the game against Palo Alto because one, I used to coach there and two, they are the defending league champions.”
Hernandez’s goal for this season is to put out a team that is a great representative of OLLU on the court, as well as a competitive one. In addition to that, the hopes are that the basketball team will still attract the crowds it had from last year.
“Currently we are trying not to become the forgotten son,” he said. “With all of the excitement of the new sports program it can be easy to forget that we are still around. We would like to see all of the students come out to our games – having support does a lot for a team.”
The team is primarily made up of freshmen with a few “proven” veterans left to step up and lead the team to victory. The season is set, and the players are ready. All that is left is the audience.
