Since the kick-off of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) program, OLLU’s view of sports has changed. The formerly leading athletic attraction at the Lake – club teams – has been replaced by the NAIA soccer and volleyball teams. Both female- and male-basketball teams, along with the volleyball club team, have taken the positions of runner-up.
Additionally, the club teams now have the added task of having to advertise their teams. Despite all of this, the volleyball and basketball clubs are working diligently to improve their new teams.
“Our first game went well,” volleyball club captain Nancy Garcia said. “We have a great team full of talent this season and we are going to do our best in executing it.”
With the NAIA teams now in place, interest in club sports could have fallen. However, according to sports coordinator D.J. Rodriquez, the interest in this year’s club teams is greater than last year, especially for volleyball where 22 girls tried out compared to 14 last year.
Concerning the gym schedules, practice times and game times, the schedule is worked out so that every team can use the gym. As Vice President of Student Life Jack Hank states, “We are keeping everything the same.”
