Presentation offers tips for keeping debt under control

Editor in chief

Want to make sense of the financial world? On Tuesday, Oct. 23, “Ultimate Money Skills: Scholars, Dollars, Budget and Bills,” gave a few tips on how to keep track of nickels and dimes.

During the “Ultimate” presentation, sponsored by online job locator Monster.com and Bank of America, speaker Jean Fedora talked candidly about credit card debt, monthly spending habits and even budgeting after college. She capped her talk off with information about identity thief, an increasing issue for spenders 18-22 years old.

“One mistake that students often make is impulse spending and going on shopping sprees,” Fedora said. In her presentation, Fedora also demonstrated that a $61 pair of designer jeans can end up costing $131 if left as a balance on a credit card for three years. Some were surprised to know that the average amount of credit card debt per student is $2,700, at an annual interest rate of 17 percent resulting in $459 a year in interest costs.

Additionally, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater San Antonio is making attempts to visit here. The services they provide vary from college credit workshops to student loan counseling and budget workshops. This organization has plans to come to the Lake but will need at least five students that are guaranteed to attend before they can make it official.

For more information, or to sign up for the San Antonio Consumer Credit Counseling Service session, contact DeAnna Campbell, manager of the Student Employment Office, at (210) 434-6711, Ext. 2700.
