Over
the summer, as the campus settled
into a peaceful break, the remnants
of last spring’s vote of no
confidence and a divided SGA general
council still loomed in the air.
The SGA office in UWAC 107 still held
the past ideas of former President
Doug Mercado. The initiative last
year was to unite the students, and
SGA even opened a little coffee station
in their office in order to provide
students a place to come and discuss
issues over a cup of Joe.
This year, that barely used coffee
maker is nowhere to be seen. As a
matter of fact, last time it was seen
it was rotted over (apparently never
cleaned), resulting in an unusable
machine.
The meaning behind this? That the
goals of SGA vary from president to
president, one may want to build an
open line of communication between
students and representatives another
may want to start a grassroots operation,
ending student apathy.
Will the initiatives of this year’s
presidency end similar to last, with
leftover ideas rotting away in an
empty office? Or will they inspire
the students of OLLU to realize that
their tuition and time entitle them
to make decisions and change the way
the university views student voices?
It remains to be seen but the hopes
are that these changes will lead SGA
to come to a quorum, and pass resolutions
that will help the student body.
