Director
Tom Brady (not to be confused with
the NFL quarterback) has crafted quite
possibly the worst movie with some
of the most memorable lines in a comedy.
“The Comebacks” is terrible.
It is part of the new “spoof”
movies that don’t even try to
be slightly serious.
Dave Koechner plays Coach Lambeau
Fields, a second-rate coach and a
third-rate man. He is talked into
taking a job coaching Heartland State
University’s football team by
his friend Freddie Wiseman (Carl Weathers).
Fields assembles a rag-tag group of
players, which spoofs everyone from
Vince Papale in “Invincible”
to Rudy Ruettiger in “Rudy.”
The movie follows their run to the
college playoffs.
While clearly everything is done with
a very tongue-in-cheek feel, the movie
is not too funny. It is over the top
but doesn’t seem to have any
heart to it. Its direction seems more
indicative of a series of “Saturday
Night Live” sketches or something
off of “Mad TV.”
The plot barely connects each scene
together. Koechner, a veteran of spoofs
and raunchy comedies, seems very out
of his depth as the main star of the
movie. Matthew Lawrence, who has been
off the map since “Blossom”
in the 1990s, randomly has a role
as the quarterback of the team. He
manages OK with what little he is
given.
The movie was never meant to win awards,
except for some Razzies, but it’s
sad to think that someone actually
thought this would be worth making.
There are some good moments in the
film, such as when former NFL greats
Lawrence Taylor and Michael Irvin
are restricted from joining the team
because Fields claims that they don’t
look any good. Weathers is comedic
gold in the movie as well.
But movies such as “The Comebacks”
show that the spoof genre might need
to be retooled a bit before another
total bomb like this is released.
