Sports blog: Here’s to the Cinderella teams

Sports editor

Gardner-Webb University added themselves to the ever-growing list of spectacular Cinderella-esque endings in sports on Wednesday when they defeated No. 22-ranked Kentucky. Gardner-Webb, a mid-major team that boasted a 9-21 record last season, will now play in the 2K College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer next Thursday in Madison Square Garden.

Almost every sporting event boasts an underdog. Sure, yeah, there are the instances when both teams are evenly matched and such, but for the majority of the time you can find a favorite to win leaving the opposition in the underdog category.

The underdogs are often forgotten, left by the wayside, especially when the game turns out as predicted and they walk away the losers. However, every once in awhile we come across a Gardner-Webb story (for the last week or so college basketball has seen multiple Gardner-Webb stories, just ask Michigan State and Ohio State).

These Cinderella endings are what make watching sports even more interesting, as well as exciting. So here’s to all the other underdogs out there in hopes of more Cinderella endings.

What is your opinion on Cinderella endings? Should we hail the winner for their defeat of the favored team? Or criticize the favorite for not playing up to par? Post comments/responses at the Lake Front’s myspace page....www.myspace.com/ollulakefront.

Response to “Gettin’ on the Juice” blog:

“Yea...Tessa....you go girl!!!.....I can’t say enough about steroids and athletes abusing them. But it’s not a bad idea to start testing early, so we won’t have any more incidents where ‘ahem’ individuals are confessing to actually using steroids to enhance their game later on in their careers...No More Juice!!...lol”
-Anthony Gomez

“Nice!!! I think they should start testing in high school, because that’s an age where kids start thinking about taking sports to the next level and trying to enhance their chances of making it pro or getting that scholarship... I agree with Ant.. ‘NO MORE JUICE’”
-Derek Ezell
