Backstreet’s back, all right! Or, well, so they are trying to be back again.
The once teeny-bopper boy band, now turned mature adult quartet, released their sixth (yes, the have been around that long) album, “Unbreakable,” on Nov. 20. For those of us who were a part of their millions of adoring pre-teen fans, the album is a symbol that we, along with the four remaining members of the Backstreet Boys (Nick, Howie, AJ, and Brian), have gotten just a tad bit older.
The album is not groundbreaking (although I would love to be able to say that it is, as I once spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 per ticket to see them TWICE!) It is, however, not horrible either.
The 14 tracks on the album are far from the catchy beats and lyrics of “Everybody” and “As Long as You Love Me,” but what they do offer is something BSB has been able to supply since the first single: beautiful harmonies, great hooks, and incredible melodies. Despite being reduced from five to four, it is still possible to hear that distinct BSB sound.
I suggest that if you were once an adoring BSB fan, pick up the album or download, legally, a few of the tracks like “Helpless When She Smiles” and “Love Will Keep You Up All Night” just to see how the group, and possibly you, have changed.
Don’t expect it to sound anything like what Mr. Timberlake is providing, (not that JT doesn’nt put out some hot stuff) but BSB has grown up and this album is proof.
