Green is S.A.’s first all-vegetarian restaurant

Thinking about going green? Try eating it. Green, at 1017 N. Flores, offers vegetarian cuisine and coffee that will peak any meat lover or vegetarian’s interest. The restaurant mixes a nice atmosphere with a helpful staff who will answer any questions or concerns for first-time veggie eaters.

For those veterans of the veggie lifestyle, Green has made it its mission to serve “delicious and affordable vegetarian comfort food.” Furthermore, according to Green’s menu, “no meat will ever be cooked at Green,” and when eggs are used they are gathered from free-range chickens. To add to the Green stand, all breads, dressings and desserts are vegan and use soy milk.

With all the jargon it is easy to be intimidated, but the wait staff at Green is friendly and helpful. Classic San Antonio food such as nachos and taco salad are given a twist, instead of meat in the chili, there are tasty beans.

A popular dish is the chicken-fried wheat meat, served with cream gravy. Or, try a green burger. The vegetarian patty is made in the kitchen and is served on two tasty wheat buns. The tortilla soup is just as delicious.

Though the food is great, first-time veggies eaters should be aware that the food has a different texture and sometimes falls apart. Finally, end your green experience with any selection of vegan desserts. The large cookies are a treat and include vegan chocolate that tastes just like the real thing.

Green goes all the way and uses a thermal roof barrier to conserve energy, reused tables and booths for seating, biodegradable packaging when available, in addition to a recycling dumpster for cardboard. They are currently working on a water system that uses rainwater for landscape purposes.

It is hard to feel bad after eating at Green. The food is great and affordable, hardly anything over $8, the setting is comfortable, the people are nice and they are helping the environment.

Green is open from Monday-Thursday 7 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday from 7a.m.-7p.m. and Sunday from 8a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, call Green at (210) 320-5865.
