Josh Hartnett has had the career of a teenage heartthrob thrown by the wayside. I personally feel like he was given a raw deal. He had a supporting role in “Halloween: H20” and he was cast as the villain in 2001’s retelling of the play “Othello,” simply called “O.” He had a starring role in “40 Days and 40 Nights,” but I never saw it so I can’t include it. However, I liked his cameo in “Sin City” and his role in “Wicker Park.” “The Black Dahlia” wasn’t too great, but he did a very solid acting job there as well.
The guy has the perfect voice for narration. He has this smooth, even delivery that money cannot buy, but, I have to say, that same voice makes him seem like he is unable to really put a lot of emotion into his roles.
I think that the success of “30 Days of Night” at the box office, with Hartnett starring, will be able to propel him back to a more prominent position in casting. I saw the film over the weekend, and I thought it was a solid vehicle for him. He does play the role with the same sense of detachment that seems to plague his roles, but there are several parts in the movie where Hartnett really gets intense. You begin to see the parts of him that could turn him into a Mark Wahlberg-esqe type of actor.
Hopefully, he will get more looks. I think if audiences enjoyed a movie with him as the lead as much as they have “30 Days of Night,” then they will want to see him as a big lead. I just see a massive amount of squandered potential that can be put to better use.
