Quentin
Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have
paired up to bring a double feature
to us in the coming weeks. “Grindhouse”
is a two-part back-to-back set of
films that pays tribute to the old
’70s exploitation films. It
is even shot like an old horror film,
paying even further homage.
I like the idea of this type of picture
because it reminds us moviegoers that
there was an era when computer-generated
graphics were not part of every single
shot. It may seem hokey now, but the
over-the-top violence and blood made
these films a guilty pleasure for
many and allowed for a more interesting
addition to film genres.
I think the movies will be great.
I think Rodriguez and Tarantino are
top-notch directors who are going
to be able to pull off the project
well and do the genre and old fans
of these types of films justice. These
two don’t make many mistakes
as filmmakers and it’s that
level of attention to detail that
will shine through.
The other good thing is, as far as
I know, this isn’t a remake
of some old horror film. I’ve
gotten tired of remake after remake
of films. However, I do enjoy “The
Hills Have Eyes” and expect
its sequel to also do well.
But I think this could also be the
start of a new trend; well, sort of.
The homage is as old as time itself,
but hopefully this could give other
talented directors like Steven Soderbergh,
Joel Schumacher, the Coen brothers,
and Eli Roth (who directed a “fake”
trailer for one of the films) confidence
to undertake just this sort of task.
It could be such a massive revolution
to revitalize a boring CGI-fest-oriented
time period in filmmaking. As long
as someone is trying something new,
there is a good chance at finding
something good.
Or maybe it won’t do well, and
we could have another bomb like
“Gigli” on our hands.
But as Rocky Balboa said, “It
ain’t how hard you can hit,
it’s how hard you can get hit
and keep moving forward.”
Hollywood, here’s your chance
to step up.
