Dinner on a Dime
Miracle on Zarzamora Street

Lake Reporter

With the prices of the cafeteria as high as they are and with almost every major fast-food franchise having a location on Commerce, it can still be tiresome finding a decent meal for a good price.

If you are willing to take a five-minute drive off campus, you’re in for a treat. The Zarzamora Grocery on 2320 N. Zarzamora, is the typical bodega with one exception, they sell Chinese food.

For only $3.99 (plus tax) you can buy the “All-Day Special” which includes an entrée of your choice of the following favorites: lemon chicken, sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken, orange chicken, beef and broccoli, chicken and broccoli, pepper steak and Hunan beef and chicken.

An extra 50 cents will get you a half/half combination of two entrées. Each “All-Day Special” also comes with a side order of either fried rice, lo mein noodles or an egg roll.

But the Zarzamora Grocery doesn’t stop there; they also serve egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, crabmeat rangoon, and biscuits. One surprising item that they sell is fruit cups which are $2. Since it is a convenience store, there are dozens of choices of drinks to buy with your food but a dollar will get you a large 32-ounce iced tea.

The size of the portions leave you satisfied and with leftovers. The food served at this little store is good for the soul as well as the wallet and just plain good.
