The interior of Demo's fits well with the Greek setting.

Gyros, food of the gods

Lake Reporter

After passing it several times while going to the live music venue The White Rabbit, Demo’s Greek Food on North St. Mary’s Street looked like it might be good. Before trying a new restaurant, it’s a good idea to find out if the restaurant has a Web site with a menu and prices to see how expensive the food is.

Demo’s has a gyro lunch special for $6.99. The gyro is a Greek entrée consisting of roasted strips of ground beef and lamb. It is filled with tomato and also comes with onion on a pita. A Greek salad, fries and a drink complete the special. After checking the menu for its regular price, I made sure to make it for the lunch special between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

When you first walk in to Demo’s, you will be in awe. There is a grand presence of a large sun design in the middle of the dining room as well as a large mural painting of a beach in Greece located on the balcony in the restaurant. If the weather is nice, go out on their gorgeous balcony for a view overlooking The White Rabbit and the Mix Night Club.

The gyro was amazing, and the Tzatiki sauce (made of sour cream and garlic) wasn’t too heavy on the garlic. The fries were good as well, and, if you look at several spots around the restaurant, you will see that Demo’s uses 100 percent Canola oil, which results in zero trans fat in their fries. The Greek salad was also noteworthy because it included fresh romaine lettuce, olive oil, red wine vinegar dressing, feta cheese and Greek spices.

The lunch special was worth the money, and Demo’s can get packed with people at certain times. Even Neo himself, Keanu Reeves, stopped by about eight years back when his band, Dogstar, played in San Antonio.

“Most of the performers from the White Rabbit eat over here,” said Marie Zimzores, part owner of Demo’s. “We’ve also had Vanilla Ice come and eat over here.”

There you have it folks. If you’re looking for a different restaurant with a nice atmosphere, good service, and the chance of a celebrity encounter, Demo’s is a place to go. If you live on the North Side of San Antonio, there is also a location near the intersection of Blanco Road and Loop 410. For more information, visit their Web site at www.demosgreekfood.com.
